Even Star Wars fans sometimes forget that this wonderful and extremely diverse series exists. The third season with nine new episodes will be released this year.
When it comes to Star Wars series, most fans first think of well-known representatives such as The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels from the animation sector. Since Disney+ launched, major live-action series have also been added, most notably The Mandalorian, which opened this genre in the Star Wars universe.
In addition, there is a very special series that is often forgotten: Star Wars: Visions. This unusual project premiered four years ago. It will continue this year with a third season and a total of nine new episodes. Here you can find all the important information about this intergalactic gem.
What exactly is Star Wars: Visions?
To date, Star Wars: Visions comprises two seasons, each with nine episodes telling completely independent stories. As if that weren’t exciting enough, a different animation studio is behind each episode. This means that the stories differ greatly not only in terms of content but also stylistically.
Watch the trailer for Star Wars: Visions here:
Star Wars as a black-and-white samurai movie with red lightsaber accents? No problem. Star Wars as a lovingly crafted stop-motion adventure? Bring it on. And Star Wars in abstract shapes and colors that can keep up with the flood of images in the Spider-Verse movies? It’s all possible with Star Wars: Visions.
Which studios are behind Star Wars: Visions Season 3?
After the anthology series recently traveled the globe, the nine episodes of Season 3 all come from Japan again. The anime approach was originally part of the series’ concept. Now the focus is returning to that – not least because Star Wars Celebration is also taking place in Japan this year.
Four anime studios from the debut round are returning with new short films:
Kamikaze Douga (season 1, episode 1: The Duel)
Kinema Citrus (season 1, episode 4: The Bride of the Village)
Production I.G. (Season 1, Episode 5: The Ninth Jedi)
Trigger (Season 1, Episode 7: The Old One)
Five new names will join the Star Wars: Visions cosmos:
Anima (known for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)
David Production (known for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)
Polygon Pictures (known for Tron: Uprising)
Project Studio Q (known for Evangelion 3.0)
Wit Studio (known for Attack on Titan)
Polygon Pictures even had a previous Star Wars contact a long time ago. The studio was involved in the production of The Clone Wars from seasons 3 to 6. Now it is delivering its own story.
Why isn’t there a Star Wars: Visions episode from Ghibli?
Two Japanese releases and still no short film from the legendary Studio Ghibli, the studio behind anime masterpieces like My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro?! How can this be? Both Star Wars fans and anime fans are wondering about the lack of Studio Ghibli.
It is not known why Ghibli has not yet contributed a short film to one of the seasons of Star Wars: Visions. There is a consolation prize, though: three years ago, to mark the three-year anniversary of The Mandalorian, Zen – Grogu and the Soot Men actually did release a hand-drawn short film from the House of Ghibli.
