J.J. Abrams successfully relaunched the Star Trek universe. Nevertheless, he wanted to leave – and gave a specific reason for doing so.

With Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, director, screenwriter and producer J.J. Abrams was able to help the franchise achieve new fame in cinemas. Nevertheless, he didn’t stay for the finale.

J.J. Abrams’ achievements in film and television

Series creator J.J. Abrams is known for numerous film and series projects. He was behind both Fringe and Alias – Die Agentin and is considered the driving force behind the successful series Lost. Star Trek fans will know him as the director of the 2009 and 2013 reboots.

Despite great success at the box office, Abrams left the remake, although a third film was still to come out with Star Trek Beyond. Abrams refused to return as director for the space adventure with the crew around Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.

A new voice for Star Trek

As Huff Post reported as early as 2016, there is a very specific reason for J.J. Abrams’ decision. The film and series creator explained this shortly before in an interview:

After we made two of these films, it was clear that it was the right step to hire a different director to bring his perspective and voice to the process.

That’s how Fast & Furious director Justin Lin came into the picture, who went on to finish the trilogy Abrams started with Star Trek: Beyond.

Abrams welcomed the change. According to him, the franchise benefited from Lin, a die-hard Trekkie, taking the director’s chair.

J.J. Abrams left the Star Trek cosmos as a director after Into Darkness. With Star Wars: The Last Jedi, he relaunched the Star Wars saga in 2015 and returned to the director’s chair for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, replacing Colin Trevorrow. Since then, Abrams has mainly worked as a producer.
