Rarely has a blockbuster been so crushed by the pandemic as this one. Tonight you can experience the superhero movie from DC on TV.

Things could hardly have gone worse for the DC film Wonder Woman 1984. The superhero blockbuster starring Gal Gadot was eagerly awaited after the popular first part. Then came the coronavirus pandemic and the Wonder Woman sequel was crushed by the difficult conditions.

What is Wonder Woman 1984 about?

Wonder Woman 2 picks up almost 65 years after part 1. A lot of time has passed since her adventures in World War II, even though the decades have hardly left a mark on Diana Prince (Gal Gadot). Nevertheless, she still has not forgotten her great love Steve Trevor (Chris Pine).

The year is 1984 and the feisty Amazon is working as an archaeologist at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC, under a secret identity. In the course of her research, she comes into contact with a peculiar artifact: the yellow gem is said to grant wishes. Accordingly, dubious characters are after the treasure: the power-hungry Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) has set his sights on it.

Wonder Woman 1984 never had a chance in the cinema

The superhero film starring Gal Gadot is perhaps the most symbolic victim of cinema policy during the coronavirus pandemic. In Germany and in some other parts of the world, cinemas were closed for months due to the risk of infection. The theatrical release of Wonder Woman 1984 was postponed several times.

When it became clear that the situation would not return to normal anytime soon, the studio Warner decided: Wonder Woman 1984 would be released simultaneously in US cinemas and on the streaming service HBO Max on December 25, 2020. An unthinkable strategy for a blockbuster of this size.

In Germany, the Wonder Woman sequel was released exclusively on Sky Cinema and Sky Ticket (now WOW) on February 18, 2021. In the summer, the film received a small theatrical release in Germany, where it grossed a mere $71,659 according to Box Office Mojo.

Overall, the $200 million film grossed $169 million – far too little for a theatrical release. It is hard to say whether Wonder Woman 2 recouped its costs digitally and via home video. After the pandemic, the major US studios backed away from releasing their blockbusters digitally too early.
