The new Game of Thrones spin-off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is coming our way at a gallop and is supposed to be something very special. Just not what you would expect, says original author Martin.
Game of Thrones and its prequel House of the Dragon tell epic fantasy stories about large armies and giant dragons. The upcoming spin-off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is also set in the world of Westeros, but is supposed to be a completely different beast.
Mastermind George R.R. Martin, the author of the book templates, who has already seen the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in its entirety, is also of this opinion – and is simply thrilled.
Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin is thrilled with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but warns fans
In an interview with Collider, Martin once again expressed his satisfaction with the series adaptation of his A Song of Ice and Fire novella, but prepared fantasy fans for the more modest scale of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms:
I saw the first season [of] Dunk and Egg and it’s great. […] These two characters were special to me and they’re not what most people would expect in a fantasy story. [The series] is a bit softer, a bit more humorous. I hope the audience is open to that kind of change.
The series is set about 100 years before Game of Thrones and is about the hedge knight Ser Duncan the Great (Peter Claffey), who takes the young boy Ei (Dexter Sol Ansell) as his squire and wanders with him through the Seven Kingdoms.
Surprise for Game of Thrones fans: A second season of A Knight of the Kingdoms is already in the works
At the same time, GRRM casually mentioned that they are already working on the second season of A Knight of the Kingdoms. However, HBO has not yet officially approved this. Season 1 was supervised by Ira Parker, who also worked on House of the Dragon as showrunner.
A Knight of the Kingdoms still does not have a fixed date. However, the series is scheduled to air on the US channel HBO (and in this country Sky/WOW) in the second half of 2025. The first season will consist of six episodes.
At the same time, work is of course being done on the third season of House of the Dragon.
