Stephen King’s horror story Carrie has been adapted no fewer than four times. Amazon is now sending Mike Flanagan, who usually conjures up horror on Netflix, to work on the next version.
It’s official: showrunner Mike Flanagan is taking on the series adaptation of Stephen King’s classic coming-of-age horror Carrie. However, this makes the horror maestro a defector, as he is actually known for Netflix series such as Haunting of the Mary Celeste, Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher.
Stephen King’s Carrie is becoming a horror series for Amazon – thanks to Netflix gurus
Deadline has now confirmed that Amazon has ordered eight episodes for the Carrie series, with Mike Flanagan as showrunner, executive producer and even director – and there is already a potential Carrie White. Newcomer Summer H. Howel is being talked about for the title role of the telekinetically gifted outsider. Her antagonistic classmate Sue is to be played by Siena Agudong (Resident Evil).
Carrie is Stephen King’s debut novel, which has already been made into four films. The most famous of these is Brian De Palma’s 1976 adaptation Carrie: The Devil’s Daughter. In that film, Sissy Spacek played the teenager, while Piper Laurie gave an unforgettable performance as her religiously fanatical mother, Mrs. White.
This was followed by the 90s sequel Carrie 2 – Revenge, a TV remake and the 2013 reboot Carrie. In addition, there is a musical version, which is considered one of the biggest flops in musical theater. The new series is now to be a remake, about which the Amazon MGM Studios says the following in a statement:
Carrie is an iconic story that has stood the test of time and continues to be culturally relevant. With Mike Flanagan at the helm and an experienced team, including producer Trevor Macy, this provocative series is sure to captivate our global audiences.
When is the Amazon series about Stephen King’s Carrie coming?
The Carrie series is not expected before 2026, even though the series is already further along than if it had just been ordered from scratch. A writers’ room has been at work since the fall.
Those who want to see the masterful Brian De Palma film in the meantime can find it on the Amazon channel MGM+ or as a rental or purchase title from the usual sources.
