In Germany’s only outdoor women’s pool, the women not only swim topless, in bikinis or swimming costumes, but sometimes in full-body burkini like Yasemin (Nilam Farooq). This is a thorn in the side for the seasoned women like Eva (Andrea Sawatzki) and Gabi (Maria Happel), who feel pressured.
For the lifeguard (Melodie Wakivuamina), the situation sometimes gets out of hand, especially when a group of completely veiled women discover the outdoor pool for themselves. The discussions lead to questions about who owns the female body, when a woman considers herself a woman and what rules there should be in a women’s outdoor pool. When the lifeguard hangs up her job when the women cannot abide by her simple rules, a man of all people is hired as lifeguard. But that’s when the heated discussions really begin.

In her new comedy, director Doris Dörrie (“Männer”) once again gives women a voice and shows with biting and warm-hearted humour what it means to be a woman in different cultures. The large ensemble cast includes Andrea Sawatzki (“HERRliche Zeiten”), Nilam Farooq (“Contra”), Lisa Wagner (“Das Glaszimmer”), Maria Happel (“Die Goldfische”), Melodie Wakivuamina (“Der Lehrer”), Julia Jendroßek (“Rate Your Date”) and Sabrina Amali (“Julia muss sterben”).
Dörrie wrote the script together with Karin Kaçi (“Anduni”) and Madeleine Fricke (“Einmal bitte alles”). Filming took place at the Ainhofen outdoor pool in Bavaria. For the fading outdoor pool season in 2022, the comedy “Freibad” will be released in German cinemas from 1 September 2022. The world premiere took place as part of the Munich Film Festival in June 2022.
