Botched cameo in “She-Hulk”: This is why episode 3 makes no sense

by Han

Our YouTuber Sebastian is disappointed with “She-Hulk” on Disney+. In his latest video, he offers a lot of criticism about the latest episode of the Marvel series. He also explains why a forgotten MCU character could now be returning.

Our Marvel expert Sebastian actually follows every MCU series with great interest. But “She-Hulk: The Lawyer” hasn’t picked him up yet. He already explained the reasons for this in his videos on episode 1 and episode 2. But with the third episode of the Disney+ series released last Thursday, there is yet another point of criticism. The plot around Wong (Benedict Wong) and Emily Blonsky a.k.a. Abomination (Tim Roth) makes no sense at all to Sebastian. He explains why in the video above, where he also hints at the return of a character we last saw in 2008. But we have also summarised the most important points for you in text form.

WHY DID WONG FREE ABOMINATION?

In episode 3 of “She-Hulk” there is a reunion with Sorcerer Supreme Wong, who has become one of the most important supporting characters in the MCU due to his appearances in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Doctor Strange 2”. Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) contacts the Sorcerer because it was he who freed her client Emil Blonsky from prison to fight with him in an underground fight club. Surely the Sorcerer Supreme has a valid reason for this action, one might think. But no such thing: he simply wanted a worthy opponent to prove himself as Sorcerer Surpreme.

For Sebastian, this reasoning is not satisfactory. So far, it has never been mentioned in the MCU that a Sorcerer Supreme even needs such a display of his powers.

It seems as if “Shang-Chi” director Destin Daniel Cretton and his team just wanted to have a gripping fight for their Fight Club and threw together two random MCU characters without having a bigger plan behind it – and “She-Hulk” now had to make up for this omission.

But Sebastian thinks MCU mastermind Kevin Feige and the writing team around Jessica Gao have come up with a poorly thought-out explanation. Perhaps the upcoming episodes will reveal a deeper reason for this, but as of yet, this and other connections with the rest of the MCU seem rather sloppily implemented in “She-Hulk”, Sebastian thinks.

WHO WILL BE THE BIG “SHE-HULK” VILLAIN

With Titania (Jameela Jamil), a character has already appeared in “She-Hulk” who will take on an even bigger role as an antagonist in the coming episodes. But there seems to be another villain pulling the strings in the background. In episode 3, Jennifer was attacked by three men who wanted to take a blood sample from her. It seems that someone is interested in experimenting with the “She-Hulk” blood and possibly even creating more Hulks.

The closest match would be Dr Samuel Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson). In the Marvel comics, he is one of the Hulk’s fiercest adversaries under the name The Leader. He also appeared in the 2008 MCU film “The Incredible Hulk”. It was Dr Sterns who turned Emil Blonsky into Abomination. In the process, he also got some of Banner’s blood, which caused his head to mutate. A cliffhanger, but one that has never been picked up since. In “She-Hulk” he could now make his comeback after 14 years (!) of MCU abstinence.

But Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), known from “Daredevil” and “Hawkeye”, could also have his fingers in the pie. After all, we already know that Matt Murdoch (Charlie Cox), the Daredevil himself, will appear in “She-Hulk”.

But it’s also possible that the Skrulls are behind it. The seven alleged soulmates of Emil Blonsky are more than suspicious. Perhaps they are members of the shape-shifting alien species who want to get their hands on Abomination’s blood and therefore free him. These are all possibilities that Sebastian goes through in the video above.

Continuing next Thursday, “She-Hulk” episode 4 starts on 8 September 2022 on Disney+.
