It’s about time. After being pushed into the background in the MCU, Avengers initiator Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) celebrates a big comeback in the Marvel series “Secret Invasion” in 2023. Now there is the first trailer.
Already in 2019, we learned in the post-credit scenes of “Spider-Man: Far From Home” that we weren’t dealing with the real Nick Fury at all throughout the film, but merely Skrull Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) of “Captain Marvel” fame taking on the appearance of the former S.H.I.E.L.D. director. Meanwhile, the real Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) was on a secret mission in space. And in the upcoming MCU series “Secret Invasion”, it looks like we’ll finally find out exactly what that’s all about.
As the title of the series, which refers to a popular storyline of the same name from the Marvel comics, suggests, the whole thing might have something to do with the fact that a splinter group of Talos’ shapeshifter species has secretly infiltrated Earth. To thwart their sinister plans, Fury and Talos must team up. But who can be trusted when the Skrulls walking among us can take on any appearance?
So it remains to be seen who among the top-class cast of Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, the MCU returnees Cobie Smulders, Don Cheadle and Martin Freeman as well as Oscar winner Olivia Colman and “Game Of Thrones” dragon rider Emilia Clarke might turn out to be an alien in the end. With “One Night In Miami” and “The OA” star Kingsley Ben-Adir, however, a villainous leading man has already been confirmed in any case.
We’ll be smarter next year: “Secret Invasion” starts in early 2023 on Disney+.
