Fans of “The Templar Legacy” (or “National Treasure”, as the film is called in the original) and the sequel “The Legacy of the Secret Book” are still hoping for a repeatedly discussed third part of the treasure hunter films with Nicolas Cage. Even 15 years after Part 2, this is still not completely off the table, but with “National Treasure: Edge Of History” we can now expect a series spin-off on Disney+, albeit unfortunately without Cage – at least for the time being.
The series is set in the same world as the films, though. This is also made clear by the first trailer, in which there is a reunion with Riley Poole, the boyfriend of Nicolas Cage’s character played by “Hangover” star Justin Bartha, who now hosts a podcast. And that’s not all: ex-FBI agent and Freemason Peter Sadusky (Harvey Keitel) is also back in the mix and apparently takes the new main character under his wing.
SUCCESSOR TO NICOLAS CAGE
This one is the young Jess Morales (Lisette Alexis), who also goes in search of a legendary treasure and in the process tries to unravel her own mysterious past. In the process, she soon clashes with the unscrupulous billionaire Billie Pearce (Catherine Zeta-Jones). For the further course of the series, it is at least planned that Jess will also meet Ben Gates, played by Nicolas Cage, who is something of a treasure hunter rock star in the world of “Edge Of History”. But it probably won’t come to that in the first season.
It remains to be seen whether Nicolas Cage will one day actually drop in on the “Legacy of the Knights Templar” series (should it be extended beyond the first season) or whether his Ben Gates will perhaps celebrate a screen comeback in “National Treasure 3”. Until then, we can pass the time at the end of the year with the first season of the streaming spin-off: “National Treasure: Edge Of History” will start on 14 December 2022 worldwide on Disney+.
