The Disney studio Pixar pulled off a stroke of genius 7 years ago with the animated film Alles steht Kopf. Now comes Upside Down 2. Rarely has a sequel made so much sense.
All Stands on Its Head stands out once again among the vast array of top-notch Pixar films. The only thing the lauded animated film has lacked so far is a sequel.
At the Disney fan convention D23, this dream was made true. Everything is upside down 2 is in the works. The girl from the first part is going through puberty and emotions can really escalate. Is she a climate activist or a successful TikToker? The sequel is set to launch in the summer of 2024 and Amy Poehler is back as the voice of Joy personified.
Everything’s Upside Down 2: This is where the sequel really makes sense
In Everything Upside Down we see the inner life of the girl Riley, portrayed with personified emotions. Joy, fear, anger, disgust and sadness battle for dominance in her mind after her family moves to a new town
Everything is upside down at Disney+: trailer for animation masterpiece
While the first installment highlighted the effects of loneliness and lack of understanding for a little girl, Pixar gets to really butter things up in Everything Upside Down 2. Riley is going through puberty, writes Polygon .
We all remember (most unwillingly) the inner chaos of adolescence. If the sequel turns out anywhere near as good as the original, though, we’ll get an insightful and creative glimpse into the tough teenage years.
So, we don’t just get to lick our own wounds of days gone by with Alles steht Kopf 2. Pixar also has a chance to prepare both kids and parents for what it means to be a teenage girl these days.
I’m usually sceptical about sequels, and with Pixar in particular, I’m more excited about completely new film ideas. With Alles steht Kopf 2, however, the potential is huge. With the short film Riley’s First Date? there was already a glimpse into new worlds of experience. Now Riley can really go on a journey of self-discovery and identity formation together with her emotions.
Everything is upside down at Disney+: Can the sequel surpass the original?
If you haven’t seen Alles steht Kopf yet, I’d urge you to check it out. Here at Moviepilot, it has been awarded a 7.8 by the community as the best animated film of the last 10 years (anime excluded) and for the editors it is the best Pixar film. Hendrik writes:
” I don’t think there will be another animated film so soon that knows how to exploit the possibilities of its genre as brilliantly as Alles steht Kopf. To abstract the emotional household of a young girl, to build plausible characters out of emotions, and to construct a story that can only work with those very characters, and no other way, that just knocked my socks off. “
Everything is upside down 2 has some pretty big shoes to fill. But with the new theme of puberty, the animated film gets a chance to work on entirely new subject matter.
Riley discovers her sexuality, the weaning from her parents begins, fears for the future awaken. Pixar taps into one of the most exciting areas of all here: growing up. Together with the unique approach of Upside Down, we could be in for one of the best sequels ever.
