Film plot and background

In her third directorial effort, Karoline Herfurth brings Nora Tschirner and Emilia Schüle in front of the camera.

Whether young or old, man or woman – almost all of us are familiar with trying to emulate a certain ideal of beauty. Young mother Sonja (Karoline Herfurth) is no different, after two pregnancies she struggles with her body image and her relationship with her husband Milan (Friedrich Mücke). Frauke (Martina Gedeck), shortly before her 60th birthday, also shares this fate and feels almost invisible to her husband. Daughter Julie (Emilia Schüle), meanwhile, is honing her modelling career, but time and again a flaw is discovered on her body…

Sonja’s friend Vicky (Nora Tschirner) deals with the issue in a completely different way. She is a strong advocate of “body positivity” and tries to encourage those around her. And after all, you don’t have to please a partner anyway, because in matters of love, man and woman will never meet at eye level anyway. But her new colleague Franz (Maximilian Brückner) would like to prove her wrong…

These German films offer somewhat lighter fare and good laughs:

“Wunderschön” – Background and theatrical release

After “Sweethearts”, in which she cast herself in a leading role, Karoline Herfurth (“The Perfect Secret”) takes a seat in the director’s chair for the third time. In front of the camera, Herfurth gathers numerous well-known German film and television faces such as Nora Tschirner (“Gut gegen Nordwind”), Martina Gedeck, Joachim Krol, Emilia Schüle (“Traumfabrik”), Friedrich Mücke (“Tatort”) and Maximilian Brückner (“Oktoberfest 1900”).

During filming in late summer 2019, Emilia Schüle in particular caused a stir: The actress made headlines with her new short hairstyle. According to her own statements, her new style was part of the film, as she shaved her own hair in one scene.

Karoline Herfurth’s new directorial effort “Wunderschön” is scheduled for release in German cinemas on 3 February 2022. The comedy received an FSK rating of 6.
