The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent: action-comedy starring Nicolas Cage as himself, a CIA informant tasked with convicting a drug dealer and superfan.
Film plot and background
Action comedy starring Nicolas Cage as himself, a CIA informant tasked with convicting a drug dealer and superfan.
Nicolas Cage: He is an Oscar winner and multiple contender for the Golden Raspberry for Worst Actor. He has wowed audiences with films like “Leaving Las Vegas”, “Face/Off” and “The Colour from Outer Space”, while giving less memorable performances in “The Wicker Man”, “Drive Angry” and “Ghost Rider”. Nevertheless, the Hollywood star continues to have loyal fans.
Facing impending financial ruin and missing roles from his agent (Neil Patrick Harris), he accepts an offer from Mexican billionaire and superfan Javi (Pedro Pascal), who offers him US$1,000,000 to perform at his birthday party. At the time, however, he can have no idea that he will soon have to revive his most iconic as well as curious roles in order to save his wife (Sharon Horgan) and daughter. Javi is actually an internationally wanted drug lord and Cage is asked to use his special position to gather information for the CIA. An action-packed ride begins.
“Massive Talent” – background, cast
As curious as the premise sounds, the riskier the idea behind the film was. The screenwriters Tom Gormican (“Forever Single”) and Kevin Etten initially wrote the film just to prove to the film studios in Hollywood what they were theoretically capable of. However, a competition quickly began among the studios, which was ultimately decided by Nicolas Cage himself with his acceptance. In the USA, therefore, Lionsgate Studios is transferring the film, the screenwriter Tom Gormican is also directing and was given the nod for the final cut in post-production – an honour that cannot be taken for granted.
Filming on the curious meta-action comedy began in October 2020 in Croatia, despite a corona pandemic with a strict hygiene regime. In addition to Cage, one sees Pedro Pascal (“The Mandalorian”) as a Mexican drug lord, Neil Patrick Harris (“How I Met Your Mother”) as his acting agent as well as Sharon Horgan (“Game Night”) as Cage’s wife. Also in the cast: Tiffany Haddish (“Girls Trip”), Lily Sheen and Jacob Scipio (“Bad Boys For Life”).
Unlike in the film, Nicolas Cage does not have a daughter, but two sons. In addition, “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” – the film’s impressive original title – marks the 100th acting appearance in Nicolas Cage’s long and unique career.
