Druk: Danish tragicomedy starring Mads Mikkelsen, a teacher who undergoes an experiment to teach only with alcohol levels from now on.
Film plot and background
Danish tragicomedy with Mads Mikkelsen, who as a teacher undergoes an experiment to teach only with alcohol levels from now on.
Martin’s (Mads Mikkelsen) life follows a perpetually same rut. As a high school teacher he can only motivate his students to a limited extent, his marriage lacks passion and in general he is going through a phase without much enthusiasm.
During an evening with his three colleagues Tommy (Thomas Bo Larsen), Nikolaj (Magnus Millang) and Peter (Lars Ranthe), he discusses the world’s great philosophers and a theory is put to the test. A Norwegian philosopher has been of the opinion that man was born with 0.05 ‰ in his blood too little to lead a fulfilled life. After all, alcohol not only wakes up tired spirits, but loosens the tongue at the same time. The next day, the four cannot let go of the idea. They decide to do a self-test: During working hours, they want to maintain a continuous level of 0.05 ‰ in order to make the lessons more exciting.
Initial results are more than satisfactory and the urge for harder stuff soon becomes a test of endurance for Martin and his friends, putting not only their jobs in danger, but also their private lives.

“Der Rausch” – theatrical release, FSK, background information
For his new film “The Rush”, Danish director Thomas Vinterberg brings old companions back in front of the camera. First and foremost Mads Mikkelsen, who won the award for best actor in Vinterberg’s “The Hunt” at Cannes. Thomas Bo Larsen (“The Feast”), Magnus Millang (“The Commune”) and Lars Ranthe (again “The Hunt”) complete the cast.
“The Intoxication” subscribes to a popular thesis about the creative results a small amount of alcohol can bring us to, but on the other hand it shows in an oppressive way how a constant alcohol level can successively destroy life. Vinterberg, who once signed the Dogma 95 manifesto in Cannes, also relies on the improvisation of his actors in “Intoxication” and shows the moment with his handheld camera instead of dictating it.
Der Rausch” will be released in German cinemas on 22 July 2021, the film is approved for the age of 12 and up.
“The Rush” – Oscar win 2021
In Denmark, “The Intoxication” has already become a box-office success, even despite the weaker box-office performance in the corona pandemic. As the official Danish entry, the tragicomedy won Best International Film at the 2021 Oscars. Director Thomas Vinterberg was nominated for Best Director over it. During his acceptance speech, Vinterberg dedicated his award to his late daughter Ida, who died in a car accident shortly after filming began and was to have a defining role in the tragicomedy.
