The Woman King: Historical biopic about a female fighting regiment in an African kingdom.

Film plot and background

Historical biopic about a female combat regiment in an African kingdom.

As the French expand their colonial powers in Africa and vie with other European powers for supremacy on the “savage” continent, resentment spreads in the kingdom of Dahomey on the coast of West Africa. General Nanisca (Viola Davis) in particular, who sees the invaders as just that and does not want to watch her country’s downfall idly, mobilises her female regiment.

At first she seeks approval for her actions from King Ghezo (John Boyega), but soon has to lead her tough women into battle. Among them is Nawi (Thuso Mbedu), her own daughter, who has not yet seen the fighting with Machete with her own eyes.

“The Woman King” – Backgrounds

The historical epic film “The Woman King” is loosely based on true events. In the former kingdom of Dahomey, which lasted for over 260 years and was dissolved in 1904, female regiments were the order of the day. Today, the Republic of Benin is located in the same place, between Nigeria and Togo.

Under King Ghezo (1818 to 1858), the population was heavily militarised. About a third of the army’s strength consisted of women, who felt equal to the men.
