A Big Promise: Drama about a married couple who are newly retired but must first learn to cope with their new daily lives together
Film plot and background
Drama about a married couple who have just retired, but first have to learn how to cope with their new everyday life together.
Juditha (Dagmar Manzel) and Erik (Rolf Lassgård) have been looking forward to this day. The dedicated university professor is finally starting his pension, and his wife in particular is looking forward to their time together from now on. The long marriage between them had all the usual hurdles and moments of happiness, and the grown-up daughter now has her life in her own hands.
But now, of all times, Juditha’s illness makes itself felt. She has been suffering from multiple sclerosis for years, the symptoms only seemed muted, now she will soon be dependent on outside help to go about everyday life. For her, it becomes more difficult to be active in the house and garden, while Erik has to deal with the adjustment. While he feels almost overwhelmed and looks for a way out on walks, Juditha feels left alone, soon even confessing to her husband: “Whenever you leave, you leave me.” Can their love outlast their togetherness, or will it shatter in the face of illness and age?

“A Great Promise” – background, cast, cinema release
How does one spend one’s twilight years with dignity? How do you approach your partner without blaming him or her? And how does one cope with sudden changes in everyday life when the rhythm falls out of step after years? Director Wendla Nölle (“The Chosen Ones”) deals with all these questions in her first feature film “A Big Promise”.
With Dagmar Manzel (“The Invisible”) and Rolf Lassgård (“A Man Called Ove”) wonderfully cast in the leading roles, the result is a densely told drama of a marriage in old age. On the occasion of World MS Day on 30 May, selected screenings will already take place in the same week before “A Big Promise” opens regularly in cinemas on 9 June 2022.
