Film plot and background

For two friends their carefree life ends abruptly when one of them falls into a coma after an accident. Film adaptation based on Rita Falk’s novel of the same name.

Since childhood, Moritz (Leonard Scheicher) and Hannes (Johannes Nussbaum) have been through thick and thin. Yet the two could hardly be more different: The fun-loving Hannes has his life firmly under control, whereas Moritz chases his dreams and not infrequently gets into trouble. One day, the two 19-year-olds get ready for a motorbike trip that changes everything: Hannes has an accident and injures himself badly, falling into a coma.

Whether Hannes will ever wake up again is unclear. Torn between hope and fear for his best friend, Moritz decides to go on with his life – and to always keep Hannes informed. He fights his way through the challenging civilian service at the home for the mentally ill, tries to enjoy life and love. As often as possible, he visits Hannes in hospital and writes him letters so that he can read up on everything he missed when he wakes up again…

“Hannes” – Backgrounds

The film by director Hans Steinbichler (“The Diary of Anne Frank”) is based on the novel of the same name by Rita Falk. Known for her amusing “Eberhofer” crime novels, some of which have already been filmed, Falk shows her serious side in “Hannes”. In this work, she sensitively addresses the themes of friendship, death and mourning. Dominikus Steinbichler is responsible for the screenplay adaptation.

We see Johannes Nussbaum (“Fack ju Göhte 2”) and Leonard Scheicher (“Das schweigende Klassenzimmer”) in the leading roles, as well as Lisa Vicari (“Dark”), Heiner Lauterbach (“Willkommen bei den Hartmanns”) and Hannelore Elsner (“100 Dinge”), who can be seen here in one of her last film roles.

Filming was already completed in November 2018, and “Hannes” will be released in German cinemas on 25 November 2021.
