Sing 2: Sequel to the successful animated film in which gorilla Johnny, pet pig Rosita and lady elephant Meena once again show off their musical talents.
Film plot and background
Continuation of the successful animated film in which gorilla Johnny, pet pig Rosita and lady elephant Meena once again show off their musical talents.
When “Sing” hit the cinemas in 2016, the talking and, above all, singing animals caused a sensation among young and old alike. Worldwide, the film achieved box office takings of almost 635 million US dollars with a production budget of 75 million US dollars. With these clear figures, it was quickly decided that a sequel would be made. But a good animated film takes time. After several postponements, it will be a good five years before the musical adventure about gorilla Johnny, lady elephant Meena and co. continues: “Sing 2” opens in German cinemas on 20 January 2022.
The German stars of the film get you in the mood for the trailer:
“Sing 2: The show of your life” – plot
For koala Buster Moon (Bastian Pastewka), “Sing – The Show of Your Life” is about nothing less than the most extravagant stage show of all time. With big dreams and spectacular hits in their luggage, however, the illustrious and singing troupe needs a bigger domicile than the stage of the Moon Theatre. The Crystal Tower Theatre in the big city would be perfect for this, but there are a few problems.
For one thing, there is the unscrupulous music mogul Jimmy Crystal (Wotan Wilke Möhring), operator of the Crystal Tower Theatre. To convince him to let the all-star ensemble around pig lady Rosita (Alexandra Maria Lara), rocker porcupine Ash (Stefanie Kloß), elephant Meena, gorilla Johnny and pop provocateur pig Gunter sing, they need a well-known big name. Gunter comes up with the saving idea: rock legend Clay Calloway (Peter Maffay) should return to the stage for the show.
But there is another problem: neither Buster nor the rest of the all-star ensemble has ever met Clay in person. Nevertheless, in order to realise their big dream, the troupe not only has to practice a lot, but also convince Clay to make a comeback. Clay hasn’t sung his songs in 15 years, and for good reason. The true power of music, however, lies in its healing properties…
“Sing 2” – cast, soundtrack, behind the scenes
For the sequel to the musical animated adventure, the cast is mostly made up of old acquaintances: As in the first film, Garth Jennings will direct and write the screenplay, and he will also be assisted by Christophe Lourdelet, who was already part of the animation team for “I, Simply Incorrigible 2”. Many fan favourites also return for the dubbing cast, including Scarlett Johansson (Ash), Taron Egerton (Johnny), Matthew McConaughey (Buster Moon) and Reese Witherspoon (Rosita).
New to the cast is musician Bono, head of the Irish band U2, who makes his animated film debut in “Sing 2” and contributes iconic songs like “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” to the soundtrack. In Germany you can hear the voices of Bastian Pastewka, Alexandra Maria Lara, Katharina Thalbach, Stefanie Kloß, Wotan Wilke Möhring, Luca Hänni, Julia Beautx and Peter Maffay.
