Butterflies in the ear

On est fait pour s’entendre: French romantic comedy about an ageing history teacher who has to come to terms with his deafness and discovers love along the way.

Film plot and background

French romantic comedy about an ageing history teacher who has to deal with his deafness and discovers love in the process.

Antoine (Pascal Elbé) usually lets the problems of those around him bounce off him without any comment. At the age of 50, the history teacher is usually only known as an ignoramus by those around him. Whether in front of his students, his family, his friends or his neighbour Claire (Sandrine Kiberlain), when his resounding alarm clock disturbs the neighbouring flats in the morning.

But when he even overhears the fire alarm in class, he soon has to admit to himself that something is wrong: He is as good as deaf. A change is needed. Thanks to hearing aids, he soon perceives the world like he hasn’t for a long time. But instead of seeing his surroundings in a positive light, the noises of everyday life are soon too much for him. While he slowly has to adapt to his new surroundings and takes signing lessons to do so, he finds a confidant in Claire’s daughter Violette (Manon Lemoine), of all people, who has not uttered a word since her father died. Slowly, Antoine falls in love with her mother Claire, and she with him. Could their budding relationship set Antoine’s world straight?

“Butterflies in the ear” – background, cast, cinema release

For director, screenwriter and leading actor Pascal Elbé (“Docteur Knock”), “Butterflies in the Ear” is already the third directorial effort. With the fabulous Sandrine Kiberlain (“In Safe Hands”) at his side, a film was made about growing older and new challenges in life, in which a new love also gets a chance.

With other stars such as Valérie Donzelli (“Notre Dame”), François Berléand (“The Children of Monsieur Mathieu”) and Emmanuelle Devos (“Coco Chanel”), cinema audiences can expect an adorable French romantic comedy. Producers include Eric Jehelmann and Philippe Rousselet, who only won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2022 for the US remake “CODA” of the French film “Do They Understand the Belièrs?”.

“Butterflies in the Ear” opens in German cinemas on 16 June 2022.
