Film plot and background
Marie Noelle portrays the painter, architect and founder of the Worpswede artists’ colony and Marxist Heinrich Vogeler in this docudrama.
Heinrich Vogeler (1872 – 1942) was one of Germany’s most successful artists at the turn of the century and the so-called darling of the middle classes. In his oil paintings, he refined what he saw while the world was struggling with hunger and misery.
When the First World War broke out, he volunteered for service, regardless of whether he would fall at the front. He wanted to understand the needs of the people. His art changed towards expressionism. As a dissident, it took another turn and was devoted to the ideas of the emerging Marxism. He will eventually move to Moscow and paint important paintings of Socialist Realism.
