Film plot and background

German animated film about a trio of fish who seek a fabled underwater world.

The red perch Shorty (Dirk Petrick) and his best friend sawfish Jake (Andreas Bourani) are real sportsmen and want to win the reef cup at the annual football tournament. While Shorty’s sister Indigo (Emilia Schüle) is sometimes nasty with the two of them, a big disaster happens in their idyllic reef. A human trawl devastates their home. Can they find a coral reef elsewhere that is safe from humans?

On an adventurous journey across the ocean, they search for a new home within swimming distance. When they meet the octopus lady Oana (Veronica Ferres), she tells them about a magical reef that would be untouched by human hands not far from a sunken city. There one could live in peace, they tell themselves. Always ahead of the fish fin, the three of them search the ocean. In the process, they meet strange creatures like the angler fish (Hannes Jaenicke), who prophesies an unbelievable story to the listening fish. Can they find the legendary idyll?
