Ténor: Feel-good film about a rapper who, however, gets a chance as an opera singer
Film plot and background
The talents of Antoine (Mohamed Belkhir) are manifold. In the Parisian suburbs, he heats up the hip-hop clubs as a rapper, but he can actually convince with his vocals as well. To make ends meet for himself and his family, he works as a delivery boy for a sushi shop. During a delivery for the staff of the Paris Opera, he briefly gives a glimpse of his singing skills – and promptly arouses the interest of Madame Loyseau (Michèle Laroque).
In addition to his rap qualities, Antoine has a fantastic tenor voice. Madame Loyseau takes Antoine in as a student to train him as an opera singer. Perhaps one day he could even follow in the footsteps of Giovanni Pavarotti. But for fear of difficult questions and prejudice, he keeps these dates secret from his friends and family. From then on, Antoine lives a double life that soon takes its toll.
“Tenor” – background, cast, theatrical release
On “The Voice France”, beatboxer Mohamed Belkhir, also known as MB14, came in second place in 2016, and since then he has been particularly well-known in France. As part of the crew Berywam, he crowned himself world beatbox champion in Berlin in 2018. Whether as a pop singer, opera singer, rapper, beatboxer or looping artist – since his musical beginnings on YouTube in 2010, he has proven time and again how much he loves music and the fusion of different genres.
In the sensitive drama “Tenor”, he slips into the leading role of a rapper who wants to build a new career as an opera singer, but meets with granite in his circle of acquaintances. “Tenor” also marks the acting debut for MB14. At his side, César-nominated actress Michèle Laroque (“Widow at Last”) plays his singing teacher.
Tenor” will be released in German cinemas on 3 November 2022.
