Confessions of Felix Krull: Remake of Thomas Mann’s novel starring Jannis Niewöhner as the titular Felix Krull
Film plot and background
Paris at the turn of the century: Felix Krull (Jannis Niewöhner) comes from a middle-class background and aspires to higher status. He leaves his life in Germany behind to work as a bellboy at the posh St. Edward Hotel in Paris. He quickly works his way up to head waiter and drives the noble ladies like Madame Houpflé (Maria Furtwängler) crazy.
When the paths of Felix and Zaza (Liv Lisa Fries), whom he still knows from Germany, cross, he wants to be a matchmaker. Zaza is looking for a rich man who can make her happy. Felix is sure he has found the perfect candidate in the gullible Marquis Louis de Venosta (David Kross). If it weren’t for the Marquis’ influential father (Heinrich Schafmeister), who disapproves of Louis and Zaza’s love affair. Should Louis not go on a journey for the next two years and then take over the company, he would disinherit him. Marriage to Zaza would be out of the question anyway.
Felix uses this chance to propose an exchange to the Marquis: he would pretend to be the Marquis and go on a world tour so that Louis could be happy with Zaza. The risky exchange game can begin.
