Following the premiere of Jodie Whittaker’s final special as Doctor Who, BBC has unveiled a brand new teaser trailer for next year’s three new special episodes, which will be part of the show’s 60th anniversary celebration. The specials are slated to air in November 2023.
The Doctor Who teaser trailer offers us a closer look at David Tennant’s return as the titular Time Lord. During the ending of last night’s special, fans were puzzled as to why the regeneration of Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor didn’t introduce Ncuti Gatwa as the Fourteenth Doctor. It instead resulted in the return of David Tennant, as he reappears as the Fourteenth Doctor. The video also features our first look at Ncuti Gatwa and Neil Patrick Harris.
“If you thought the appearance of David Tennant was a shock, we’ve got plenty more surprises on the way,” showrunner Russell T. Davies said in a statement. “The path to Ncuti’s Fifteenth Doctor is laden with mystery, horror, robots, puppets, danger and fun! And how is it connected to the return of the wonderful Donna Noble? How, what, why? We’re giving you a year to speculate, and then all hell lets loose!”
The upcoming fourteenth season of Doctor Who, which hails from showrunner Russell T. Davies, will be Gatwa’s first major TV project as the titular lead. He will officially become the first-ever Black actor to portray the iconic character in the history of the franchise.
Doctor Who Season 13 was written and executive produced by Chris Chibnall, who is also serving as the showrunner. He is also expected to exit the series along with Whitaker after Season 13 and the three 2022 specials. He will then be succeeded by returning executive producer and showrunner Russell T. Davies.
