De son vivant: French drama about a failed actor who has only a few months to live

Film plot and background

As an acting teacher, Benjamin (Benoît Magimel) manages to leave an impression on his students so that they can creatively incorporate their deepest fears into their work. Fate, however, does not favour him. He is diagnosed with cancer and knows he doesn’t have long to live. While his mother (Catherine Deneuve) keeps making him one offer of help after another, he lets all the offers bounce off him.

Only when the oncologist Dr. Eddé (Dr. Gabriel Sara) is entrusted with his case does Benjamin begin to expose himself to his illness. Within four seasons, he wants to make peace with death together with his mother, Dr Eddé and his assistant Eugénie (Cécile de France). Perhaps he will even succeed in teaching his students about the transience of life with the help of his mother.

“In Liebe Lassen” – theatrical release, cast, background

Director and screenwriter Emmanuelle Bercot already worked with Catherine Deneuve and Benoît Magimel in “Standing Tall” in 2015. The second collaboration depicts the slow loss of a human life in the face of a serious cancer diagnosis. At her side, for example, is renowned actress Cécile de France, as well as amateur actor and leading oncologist Dr Gabriel Sara in a leading role in front of the camera. Sara and Bercot met in 2015 at a screening of “Standing Tall” in New York. He gave the director important impulses in writing the script and working on the film.

The drama celebrated its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival 2021 out of competition. On 20 January 2022, “In Liebe lassen” will be released in German cinemas. An assessment of the FSK age rating is still pending.
