Film plot and background

Southern France in the 1970s: while the rich and famous are having wild parties in luxury villas, Parisian inspector Boulin (Christian Clavier) is seconded there by his boss (Gérard Depardieu) to solve alleged attempted murders of billionaire Tranchant (Benoît Poelvoorde).

The entrepreneur wanted his top investigator from the minister, after all, unpleasant events were multiplying in Saint-Tropez. First, his wife Élaine (Virginie Hocq) received threatening letters, then the sports car was sabotaged. When a guest borrowed the sports car, it miraculously remained unharmed despite hanging off and the brake not working.

Now Boulin is supposed to investigate on the spot, but for his boss he is actually the last choice. His career had been stalled for some time. But since no one else had time, Boulin has to pose as the rich billionaire’s butler on the spot in order to start the investigation in secret. Meanwhile, as France’s elite arrive for the annual summer festival, Boulin inadvertently causes plenty of chaos.

“Murder in Saint-Tropez” – background, cast, cinema release

More than twenty years ago, Christian Clavier and Gérard Depardieu thrilled cinema audiences as “Asterix and Obelix” in the live-action film version. In “Murder in Saint-Tropez” the duo is reunited and Christian Clavier can be seen as a policeman for the first time in his long career.

Director and co-screenwriter Nicolas Benamou (“Full Speed”) developed the crime comedy based on the Louis de Funès classic “The Gendarme of Saint-Tropez” from 1964. In addition to Clavier and Depardieu, the cast of “Murder in Saint-Tropez” is peppered with well-known stars from France and Belgium: Benoît Poelvoorde (“The Brand New Testament”), Thierry Lhermitte (“Dinner for Spinners”), Rossy de Palma (“Julieta)”), Nicolas Briançon (“Engrenages”), Chloé Lambert (“Le Chalet”) and Camille Claris (“Ausgeflogen”) are among the illustrious cast list.

In Germany, the crime comedy “Murder in Saint-Tropez” will be released in cinemas from 10 March 2022.
