Film plot and background
As a 13-year-old, teenager Mei Lee (Rosalie Chiang in the original) faces some new challenges. With her friends Miriam (Ava Morse), Priya (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) and Abby (Hyein Park), she tries to master school in Toronto but has to meet the high expectations of her strict mother Ming Lee (Sandra Oh).
Between schoolwork, the challenges of growing up and the task of pleasing her mother, Mei Lee wakes up one morning to the shock of her life. She has become an oversized red panda! Her parents reveal to her that this is because of her family and the close connection to red pandas in the family history.

“Red” – background, cast, streaming start
The new Pixar film is directed by Domee Shi, who won an Oscar for her short film “Bao”. Pixar has already been working on the original story, which was penned by Julia Cho and Domee Shi, since 2018. In addition to the music by Ludwig Göransson (“The Mandalorian”), the audience can look forward to songs by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell.
In the original English version, the main roles of Mei and her mother Ming are played by newcomer Rosalie Chiang and Sandra Oh (“Grey’s Anatomy”). It is not yet clear who will be heard in the German dubbing. The German cinema release of “Red” has been cancelled. Instead, the new Disney animated film will be available exclusively in the Disney+ streaming offer from 11 March 2022. The FSK rating is usually only announced shortly beforehand. As is usual for Pixar animated films, you can expect either an FSK 0 or FSK 6.
