Netflix star joins new Marvel series – as another young Avenger?

by Mike

On Netflix, young actor Joe Locke has long since won the hearts of viewers in the series “Heartstopper”, now Locke is setting course for Disney+. He is becoming a Marvel star – and everything points to the fact that he could play the Avenger Wiccan.

The MCU has long since conquered the series arena as well. At the beginning of 2021, “WandaVision” was the first of many Disney Plus series with which the MCU is continuously being expanded – and then also launched its own spin-off: “Agatha: Coven of Chaos”, which focuses on the witch Agatha Harkness played by Kathryn Hahn. Now she is getting reinforcement: Joe Locke from the Netflix hit “Heartstopper” joins the “Agatha” cast.

A role name for his character hasn’t been revealed yet, but Deadline has at least already gotten a description from its sources of the character Joe Locke will play: a gay teenager with a dark sense of humour.

WILL JOE LOCKE PLAY WICCAN IN “AGATHA: COVEN OF CHAOS”?

Marvel fans should immediately think of a very specific fan favourite that many have long wanted to see appear in the MCU: William Kaplan a.k.a. Wiccan, one of the Young Avengers, who is usually depicted in the comics as slender with a dark fuzzy head, which would fit the appearance of Joe Locke.

For some time now, it has been suspected that Wiccan, who possesses magical powers, and, for example, the lightning-fast young Avenger Speed will join Marvel’s film and series universe. And the fact that this could happen in the “WandaVision” spin-off “Agatha: Coven of Chaos” makes a lot of sense…

… because in some comic book origin stories, Wiccan and Speed are the sons of Scarlet Witch (in the MCU: Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (in the MCU: Paul Bettany), either incarnations of them after the twins’ existence was resolved in Scarlet Witch’s fantasy world, or the actual children adopted by two different families. The origin stories are a bit complicated – but either way, we’ve very likely seen Wiccan and Speed in “WandaVision” before: as twins Billy (short for William) and Tommy (short for Thomas Maximoff/Shepherd aka Speed).

The return of Emma Caulfield, who plays West Coventry native Dottie in “WandaVision”, was also recently confirmed for “Agatha: Coven of Chaos”. Little is known yet about the spin-off’s more specific plot, with filming set to begin before the end of 2022. We expect “Agatha” to start in winter 2023 on Disney+.

And until then, we can definitely recommend the great Netflix series “Heartstopper”, in which Joe Locke plays a gay teenager who falls in love with his classmate Nick Nelson (Kit Connor). The series has already been renewed for season 2 and even season 3. So you don’t have to fear a sudden cancellation, as just happened with “Fate: The Winx Saga”…
