Wickie – Der Kinofilm: Newcomer Julius Weckauf voices the young title character in the new German animated film about the resourceful Viking.
Film plot and background
Little Wickie (Julius Weckauf) is smart and anything but stuck on his head. Unlike many of the other Vikings, he thinks before he wants to solve a problem with pure man power. That’s why he wants nothing more than to accompany his father Halvar (Dietmar Bär) on his great sea adventures. The chief, however, sees things differently. Wickie is still too young for the rough life on board among the strong men.
When his father returns from an adventure and has stolen a magic sword from the terrible Sven, Wickie soon finds himself in a great adventure himself. He accidentally turns his mother Ylva into a statue of pure gold. To break the spell, Wickie gets help from his cousin Ylvi (Malu Leicher) and the young warrior Leif (Ken Duken). The latter tells of a legendary island, the pirate’s paradise. They say that any spell can be broken here. Wickie, Ylvi and the strong men set out to break the curse.

“Wickie and the strong men – The magic sword” – Backgrounds
Almost every child from Germany knows Wickie and the Strong Men, especially thanks to the animated series from the 1970s and the catchy theme song “Hey Wickie, hey”. However, the triumphal procession began in 1963 with the children’s book of the same name by Runer Jonsson.
Its popularity continued to grow over the decades. The first live-action film adaptation by Michael Bully Herbig was released in 2009. Another animated series followed in 2013. Now the cinema screen is being conquered once again with contemporary animation.
The title character Wickie is played by none other than newcomer and shooting star Julius Weckauf, who provided emotional moments thanks to his performance in the Hape Kerkeling biopic “Der Junge muss an die frische Luft”. Dietmar Bär (“Pets”), Ken Duken (“Traumfabrik”) and Malu Leicher (“Liliane Susewind”) can be heard in other roles. Those who want to experience the animated fun for young and old in the cinema will have to be patient a little longer. “Wickie und die starken Männer – Das magische Schwert” has been postponed indefinitely.
