Queen of the North

by Dennis

Margrete den første: Biopic about the Danish Queen Margarethe I, who was one of the most important women in world history and united the kingdoms of Sweden, Norway and Denmark into one great empire.

Film plot and background

1402: Margarethe I (Trine Dyrholm) is at the pinnacle of her political power. As the self-proclaimed Queen of Denmark, she managed to unite the kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden into a strong alliance thanks to the Kalmar Union. Her adopted son Erik (Morten Hee Andersen) will soon be appointed the rightful king and strengthen the alliance with England with a marriage.

The Nordic empire has many enemies, however, and for Margarethe begins what is probably the most difficult period of her reign. Supposedly her son Olav (Jakob Oftebro), whom she buried 15 years ago, is still alive. However, she has never seen his body. She has conflicting feelings, which she has to reconcile in view of her duties as mother and regent. Should she take a wrong step, a dastardly plot could destroy everything she has spent her life fighting for.
