Coupez!: French remake of the Japanese zombie film “One Cut of the Dead” starring Romain Duris and Bérénice Bejo.
Plot and background
Low-budget director Rémi (Romain Duris) shoots his next film on a tight budget and ventures into a daring planned sequence. Actress Ava (Matilda Lutz) is to be the final girl in a zombie production; make-up artist Nadia (Bérénice Bejo) must prove her ability to turn the actors into the undead with few resources.
But then, to everyone’s surprise, there really is a zombie outbreak – and the film crew has to run for their lives on the abandoned film lot. Thanks to the trailer for “One Cut Of The Dead” you can roughly imagine what’s in store for you in the remake “Coupez”:
“Final Cut” – background, cast, cinema release
The French remake of the Japanese festival hit “One Cut of the Dead” (2017) is directed by none other than Oscar winner Michel Hazanavicius (“The Artist”), premieres at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival as the opening film and is not competing for the Palme d’Or.
Starring Roman Duris (“L’Auberge Espagnole” series”) and Hazanavicius’ wife Bérénice Bejo (“The Artist”), the French remake relies on real star power, unlike the Japanese original by Shin’ichirô Ueda and Ryoichi Wada. Matilda Luth (“Revenge”) completes the star line-up.
If the Japanese original deliberately plays with the conventions of a low-budget production and shows how a film production can still be staged famously with few resources, a similar style can be expected in the French remake. The big difference is that the Japanese filmmakers only had a budget of about 25,000 US dollars for their work; it is not known whether the remake will keep it up.
Incidentally, the title was previously supposed to be “Z (comme Z)”, but was changed to “Coupez” (French for cut) due to sympathies with the Ukrainian population. A Z is an expression of sympathy for the Russian government.
In France, the horror comedy “Coupez” is already in cinemas on 15 June 2022. In this country, “Final Cut” will be released on 12 January 2023. One may also assume that the film title is likely to change.
