Bardo: Drama by Alejandro G. Iñárritu about a Mexican journalist going through an existential crisis
Plot and background
When a successful journalist and documentary filmmaker (Daniel Giménez Cacho) returns to his Mexican homeland, he goes through an existential crisis. Besides family conflicts, he has to come to terms with himself and at the same time find his place in modern Mexican society.

This is the first film since “The Revenant” that director Alejandro G. Iñárritu realises. After numerous projects in Hollywood, he returns to his Mexican homeland with “Bardo”.
More precise details, except that it is about a journalist in an existential crisis, are not yet known about the plot. Filming will take place in Mexico City between spring and summer 2021.
Daniel Giménez Cacho (“Siberia”), who is particularly well-known in Mexico, has been cast for the leading role. Unlike his last productions, this time cinematographer Darius Khondji (“Okja”) is behind the camera instead of Emmanuel Lubezki (“Birdman”). Lubezki was busy shooting David O. Russell’s star-studded “Amsterdam” at the same time.
“Bardo” – streaming start
“Bardo” makes its world premiere in competition at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, competing for the Golden Lion. The festival is usually in good indicator for the biggest Oscar contenders of the year to come. Could “Bardo” bring Iñárritu his third directing Oscar? We’ll know more by the 2023 Oscars at the latest.
Until then, the audience will have to be patient. The streaming service promised that “Bardo” will still be released in 2022 and is aiming for a worldwide cinema window before that. In the meantime, exact dates have also been announced: “Bardo” can be seen in selected cinemas from 17 November 2022 and will be released worldwide on Netflix on 16 December 2022.
