A great journey begins for Pinocchio as he learns to better understand his surroundings and also his father.

“Pinocchio” – background and cast

Guillermo Del Toro fulfils a real heart’s desire with the reinterpretation of the “Pinocchio” fairytale. Ever since the beginning of his career, the director has dreamed of making a film of the fairy tale. For the streaming provider Netflix, del Toro, who won the Oscar for Best Film and Best Director for “Shape of Water”, gets the chance to realise his vision.

In any case, it is certain that del Toro will take a very different approach from the world-famous 1940 Disney animated film “Pinocchio”. The reinterpretation, due in December 2022, will set the action in fascist Italy and, as a dark fairy tale, is aimed more at adults. The story will be animated in a lavish and beautiful stop-motion process.

High-calibre Hollywood stars have been recruited for the dubbing cast: Ewan McGregor (“Star Wars” series) will lend his voice to the cricket Jiminy, David Bradley (“Harry Potter” series) will take over Gepetto. The title character Pinocchio will be voiced by Gregory Mann. Also in the cast are Tilda Swinton (“Doctor Strange”), Cate Blanchett (“Blue Jasmine”), Christoph Waltz (“Django Unchained”), Ron Perlman (“Hellboy”) and John Turturro (“The Batman”).

Del Toro’s “Pinocchio” will be released in selected cinemas from 24 November 2022 and can be streamed on Netflix from 09 December 2022.
