Love Sarah: British tragicomedy about a threesome of women who want to open a patisserie
Plot and background
As a baker, Sarah Curachi (Candice Brown) has already won over many critics, but her big dream of owning her own bakery will always remain unattained. Shortly before the grand opening, she dies in a bicycle accident and her surviving relatives initially fall into deep mourning.
Her business partner Isabella (Shelley Conn) now has to shoulder the costs of the vacant bakery alone, her 19-year-old daughter Clarissa (Shannon Tarbet) suddenly finds herself without a foothold in life and her estranged mother Mimi (Celia Imrie) is also deeply affected. Clarissa, however, has the saving idea: Isabella and she want to open the bakery in Sarah’s name anyway, to commemorate her. They hope for financial support from Mimi, with whom Clarissa has a strained relationship. But grief unites and the memory is to awaken to new life in the bakery “Love Sarah” in London’s trendy Notting Hill district.
The three of them are helped by Michelin-starred chef Matthew (Rupert Penry-Jones), who suddenly appears on their doorstep one day. He is an ex-boyfriend of Sarah’s and initially a thorn in Isabella’s side. However, Mimi awakens from a monotonous sleep thanks to her new task and finds a new admirer in neighbour Felix (Bill Paterson).

“Love Sarah” – Backgrounds
With her debut film “Love Sarah”, German-born British director Eliza Schroeder not only wanted to come to terms with the death of her own mother, but also show that women with strong personalities and desires can rise to great tasks.
The enchanting British cast is led by Celia Imrie (“Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”). The other main roles are embodied by Shannon Tarbet (“Killing Eve”), Shelley Conn (“Terra Nova”), Rupert Penry-Jones (“Whitechapel”) and Bill Paterson (“Good Omens”).
The recipes for the delicious baked goods were gathered from various top UK bakers. Food stylist Rebecca Woods and top chef Yotam Ottolenghi are responsible for many of the recipes, which can be read in the baking book “Sweet”. Candice Brown, winner of the cult reality show “The Great British Bake Off” in 2016, not only makes a cameo appearance as Sarah, but also contributed recipes.
After Covid-19 brought the cinema landscape to a standstill in spring 2020, “Love Sarah” will be released in German cinemas with a slight delay on 10 September 2020.
