The biggest audience award of the year was presented. While “Doctor Strange 2” won the cinema awards, a Netflix hit was at the top of the series list: “Stranger Things”. But “Grey’s Anatomy” also won an award.
The People’s Choice Awards are the biggest and best-known US audience award, presented annually since 1975. So it’s mainly the titles and stars that are particularly popular with the masses that come out on top here – and that’s also evident this year with the series.
Netflix’s mega-hit “Stranger Things” is clearly the hit series 2022. Both the award for the series 2022 and for the series in the genre of sci-fi and fantasy went to the Netflix success. In both cases, “House Of The Dragon” was beaten. The “Game Of Thrones” prequel thus went completely empty-handed. And “Stranger Things” even picked up a third prize. Male TV star of the year was lead actor Noah Schnapp, who left Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Oscar Isaac (“Moon Knight”), Dwayne Johnson (“Young Rock”), Ewan McGregor (“Obi-Wan Kenobi”) and Norman Reedus (“The Walking Dead”) behind.
Schnapp’s colleague Millie Bobby Brown, on the other hand, had to give way to Ellen Pompeo in the category of female TV star 2022. Her series “Grey’s Anatomy” also won Best Drama Series. However, it was still not enough for Pompeo to win in the Drama Star category. Mariska Hargitay won for “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”, beating Pompeo, “Euphoria” stars Zendaya and Sydney Sweeney and “This Is Us” stars Mandy Moore and Sterling K. Brown. “This Is Us”, by the way, went home without an award despite a total of six nominations (the most of any series). Selena Gomez (“Only Murders In The Building”) triumphed among the comedy stars.
OTHER NETFLIX SUCCESSES: COMEDY AND BINGE-WATCHING
At streaming service Netflix, the three awards for “Stranger Things” were not the only thing to be pleased about. An in-house production of the streaming giant also won in the comedy series category: “Never in my life…”. And where could the binge event of the year come from if not from Netflix. “Dahmer” took the prize here, beating, among others, the terrific Disney Plus secret tip “The Bear” as well as “Bridgerton”, “The Boys” and “Inventing Anna”.
While Marvel won the box-office, the comic giant had little to gain in the series category. In the best series category, no Marvel production was nominated, and in the genre award for sci-fi and fantasy productions, “Moon Knight” and “She-Hulk” were among the titles that lost out to the aforementioned winner “Stranger Things” (as well as “The Rings of Power”).
