Avatar 2: The Way of Water

Avatar 2: “Avatar – Departure to Pandora”, the most successful film of all time, is continued. Once again James Cameron takes us into the wonderful world of Pandora.

Plot and background

“Avatar” was the most financially successful film of all time for almost ten years. The science fiction adventure around the fantastic world of Pandora took in almost three billion US dollars worldwide and was able to knock the then most successful film “Titanic”, also by James Cameron, off its throne. In order to continue the record success, the sequel was supposed to go into production in 2017, but the path for the sequel has been somewhat bumpy. In the meantime, an elaborate saga with a total of five films is planned, to be released at intervals of two years until 2028.

“Avatar 2” – plot

As far as the concrete plot of “Avatar – The Way of Water” is concerned, those responsible are keeping a very low profile. So far it is only known that the sequel will revolve around the young family of the mercenary Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and the alien warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). In addition, an old threat is to return, so that the small family is forced to leave their home. As they flee, they find refuge in the exotic sea world of Pandora.

“Avatar – The Way of Water” – Cast

Fans of the spectacular predecessor can also look forward to a reunion with old acquaintances in “Avatar 2: The Way of Water”. Since the focus will be on Jake Sully’s young family, James Cameron will also need a new cast. A first set picture has already revealed a number of new faces: the young actors are Jamie Flatters, Britain Dalton and Trinity Bliss, who belong to the clan of the Sullys. Bailey Bass, Filip Geljo and Duane Evans Jr. are the offspring of Tonowari (Cliff Curtis), whose tribe lives on a coral reef.

A special role is played by the boy Jack Champion. In “Avatar – The Way of Water” he plays the teenager Javier “Spider” Socorro, who grows up in the military base on Pandora. Unlike the other young actors, he is not transformed into a Na’vi on the computer.

Michelle Yeoh (“The Geisha”, “James Bond – Tomorrow Never Dies”) and the return of Sigourney Weaver have also been confirmed. Furthermore, Vin Diesel (“Fast & Furious” series), Giovanni Ribisi (“Senaky Pete), once again as Parker Selfridge, and Kate Winslet (“Between Two Lives”) join the cast of “Avatar – The Way of Water”.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” – Background and theatrical release

“Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora” was not only a great success from a financial point of view: the film also set new standards in the field of 3D technology. Life-like figures were set on an almost completely animated planet using motion-capture techniques and made the mammoth project a milestone in film history. James Cameron therefore started thinking about a sequel as early as 2006. In the meantime, the project has grown – Cameron wants to bring nothing less than a family saga spanning a total of five films to the cinemas in the next few years.

The star director is bringing along a whole creative team to support him. For example, Josh Friedman, screenwriter of Steven Spielberg’s “War of the Worlds”, will be involved in the second part of “Avatar”. To meet the high expectations of the audience, Cameron also wants to set new technical standards with the sequels. On the occasion of his appointment as an honorary member of the Society Of Motion Picture And Television Engineers, the filmmaker promised to usher in a new age of 3D film together with the “Weta Digital” studio.

Of course, the film’s shooting and post-production were correspondingly lengthy. Production also had to be interrupted due to the Corona pandemic. After a two-week quarantine, work resumed in June 2020 and was completed at the end of September. In addition, significant production progress had also been made on the third film. In between, producer Jon Landau also kept his fans happy via Instagram with fresh footage from the set. In the video you can see what Jon Landau tells us in an exclusive interview about the sequel:
