Shame guaranteed! In the first trailer for the Netflix comedy “You People”.

Meeting your new girlfriend’s parents isn’t always easy. Jonah Hill in “You People” has to find that out too, as he talks his head off to his future in-laws in the first trailer for the Netflix comedy

It’s one of the most awkward situations you can imagine: You meet the parents of your new partner. In order to make a particularly good impression, there is one thing you should avoid at all costs, namely talking your head off. Otherwise you run the risk of putting your foot in your mouth. The first trailer for “You People” shows how embarrassing such a case can look.

In it we witness exactly this scenario: Jonah Hill meets the parents of his girlfriend played by Lauren London for the first time. They are embodied by Eddie Murphy and Nia Long and are not at all thrilled with the way their son-in-law-to-be behaves. The comedy, directed by Kenya Barris (“Grown-ish”), can be seen on Netflix from 27 January 2023.

A HOLLYWOOD CLASSIC SERVED AS INSPIRATION

Although the first short trailer for “You People” focuses on the cringe factor that comes from Jonah Hill’s awkward statements (cue: Malcolm X), the comedy also noticeably has a socio-political underbelly. It is about social expectations such as social differences, parenting ideals and generational conflicts. A thematic field that Kenya Barris has already dealt with in the past with the series “Black-ish” and “Grown-ish”.

In addition to Jonah Hill (“The Wolf Of Wall Street”), Lauren London (“Tom Clany’s Merciless”), Eddie Murphy (“The Prince Of Zamunda”) and Nia Long (“47 Meters Down: Uncaged”), there are several other prominent names to discover in the cast list: Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Black Panther 2”) and David Duchovny (“Californication”) are also in the cast.

The screenplay was written by Kenya Barris and Jonah Hill. Duo took their cue from the classic “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”, in which Katharine Hepburn’s parents’ openness is put to the test when she reveals that she wants to marry a black man (played by Sidney Poitier).
