The Nutcracker and the Four Realms: In the Disney real-life adaptation of the Tchaikovsky ballet, a girl is immersed in a fairy tale world that she must protect from an evil fairy with the Nutcracker
Plot and background
From her godfather Drosselmeyer (Morgan Freeman), young Clara (Mackenzie Foy) receives a very special gift for Christmas: a locked chest that belonged to her mother. But first she has to find the key. On her search, Clara unexpectedly finds herself in a magical world consisting of four different realms. The Sugarplum Fairy (Keira Knightley) reigns in one, the evil Gigoen (Helen Mirren) in another.
Somewhere in the colourful parallel world, Clara’s mother’s key is hidden. But alone Clara has no chance of finding the key. Luckily she meets the young soldier Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), who accompanies Clara on all her adventures. And even at the end, when Clara enters the fourth realm of the tyrannical Gigoes, Phillip stands by her side.
“The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” – theatrical release
Following the sensational success of “Beauty and the Beast”, Disney is sending forward a new live-action adaptation to accompany Christmas. The 2018 cinema winter will also be contemplative, magical and surprising. “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” opens in cinemas on November 1, 2018.
“The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” – Cast
Two newcomers are at the helm of Disney’s new live-action film: Mackenzie Foy has already made a name for herself with “Interstellar” and “The Little Prince”. The young soldier is played by Jayden Fowora-Knight, who already took on a small role in Stephen Spielberg’s “Ready Player One”.
A great cast of veteran Hollywood actors is gathered around the two young stars. Morgan Freeman (“This Is Only the Beginning”) slips into the role of the old godfather Drosselmeyer, Keira Knightley (“Hidden Beauty”) can shine as the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Oscar winner Helen Mirren (“Winchester – The House of the Damned”), schooled in Shakespeare, is the absolute ideal casting for the evil fairy Gigoen.
The Swedish director Lasse Hallström is responsible for directing the adaptation of “The Nutcracker”. With films such as “God’s Work & the Devil’s Contribution”, “Gilbert Grape – Somewhere in Iowa” and “Chocolat – A Little Bite Is Enough”, he has already proven that he can bring drama, magic and excitement to the big screen. However, “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” required some reshoots, which were taken over by Joe Johnston (“Captain America: The First Avenger”) for scheduling reasons.
