The Pale Blue Eye: Gritty historical crime thriller starring Christian Bale about a murder at West Point.
Plot and background
In 1830, a cadet at the newly established West Point Military Academy is found dead. His heart has been removed. The investigator Augustus Landor (Christian Bale) has to solve the gruesome murder case quickly and as discreetly as possible in order not to ruin the reputation of the training school. Because of the cadets’ code of silence, he does not get far in his investigation. Finally, he finds a comrade-in-arms in their ranks, an eccentric outsider who loves poetry and hates the tough everyday life of the military. He is none other than Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling).
“The Memorable Case of Mr Poe” – cast, behind the scenes, cinema release, streaming start
The director of the Oscar-winning “Crazy Heart”, Scott Cooper, and Hollywood actor Christian Bale (“American Psycho”) work together again in this dark, historical thriller with horror elements after “Eye to Eye” and “Enemies – Hostiles”. In it, the master of horror Edgar Allen Poe makes his own appearance, as a cadet at the West Point military academy. Harry Melling, who is best known for playing Dudley Dursley in the “Harry Potter” films, plays the young Poe, who is supposed to help solve a gruesome murder. The Netflix film is based on the novel of the same name by the successful US author Louis Bayard.
The crime film shines not only in the leading roles with a top-class cast. In addition to Bale and Melling, Gillian Anderson (“Sex Education”), Lucy Boynton (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), Charlotte Gainsbourg(“Melancholia”), Simon McBurney (“Conjouring 2”), and Robert Duvall (“Road to the Wilderness”), among others, were in front of the camera.
“The Memorable Case of Mr Poe” will be screened in selected German cinemas from 22 December 2022 and can then be streamed exclusively on Netflix from 6 January 2023.
