Netflix has dropped the official trailer for Jung_E, its newest South Korean action sci-fi thriller which hails from Train to Busan director Yeon Sang-ho. The film will be available for streaming on January 20.
The video provides us with a preview of a dystopian future where the Earth is no longer habitable to the effects of climate change. It spotlights a legendary mercenary’s transformation into an AI, who’ll serve as the ultimate weapon in the emerging war.
Jung_E is written and directed by Yeon Sang-ho, who previously worked with Netflix on the supernatural thriller series Hellbound. The film also reunites Yeon with leading star Kim Hyun-joo after working together in Hellbound. in which she portrayed attorney Min Hyejin. Now, in the upcoming action sci-fi film, Kim is set to take on a highly-skilled soldier who becomes the main subject for a cloning experiment.
“In a post-apocalyptic near-future, a researcher at an AI lab leads the effort to end a civil war by cloning the brain of a heroic soldier–her mother,” reads the synopsis.
The film will also star Ryu Kyung-soo (Itaewon Club) as Sang-hoon, Park So-yi (Deliver Us From Evil) as Seohyun, and Volpi Cup-winning actress Kang Soo-yeon (The Surrogate Woman) in her final role following her sudden death due to cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 55 in 2022.
