After “1899”: Netflix has cancelled yet another German sci-fi series – and

With the recent cancellation of “1899” after only one season, Netflix has not made many friends. But the fate of the new series by the “Dark” makers is not an isolated case: “Tribes Of Europa” will also not get a 2nd season.

2017 the success of the Netflix mystery series “Dark” opened the door wide for genre material from Germany that had been so rare for a long time, especially in the streaming sector. At the beginning of 2021, this was also the case with “Tribes Of Europa”, also produced for Netflix, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi series that had probably not been seen here in this ambitious and elaborate form before.

Since the first season is now almost two years old and there has been no news about a sequel since then, many fans have been wondering for some time what the future of “Tribes Of Europa” actually holds – a question that has possibly become more urgent for many after the surprising cancellation of “1899” a few days ago.

That’s why the colleagues of our sister site Moviepilot simply asked “Tribes Of Europa” creator Philip Koch himself – and got a sobering answer: “As with ‘1899’, there will unfortunately not be a second season of ‘Tribes’ (despite good numbers and international response),” Koch told Moviepilot. So Netflix just quietly pulled the plug on the end-time series without officially announcing this decision.

CLIFFHANGER-ENDING OF SEASON 1 IS NOT RESOLVED

The cancellation of “Tribes Of Europa” is of course all the more bitter because the first season – as in the case of “1899” – ended very openly with several cliffhangers at once. Many of the questions raised in the course of the six episodes now remain unanswered.

The story about three siblings who get caught between the fronts in a Europe that has disintegrated into numerous micro-states after a mysterious catastrophe (with great visuals, after all) was not entirely convincing at the time. However, the extensive mythology, which was only touched upon in the first season, definitely had potential for further seasons, especially since Koch revealed at the start of the series that he had plans for up to nine seasons. But we will probably never see those now.

How “Tribes Of Europa” could have continued in season 2, we already speculated some time ago in a detailed article (when we were still optimistic about a prolongation):
