This series is one of the big winners of the 2022/2023 awards season and one of the best series of last year: We are talking about “Abbott Elementary”. Now Disney+ has announced the start date for season 2 – and it’s not far off.
As in previous years, the editorial team of FILMSTARTS together with the editorial team of our sister site Moviepilot created a joint list of the best series of 2022. One series made it to 25th place (and thus just barely into the ranking) that some have probably never heard of: “Abbott Elementary”. But we are by no means the only ones who like the comedy series. This became apparent at the latest during the numerous award ceremonies of the 2022/2023 season.
At the prestigious Golden Globes and Emmys, “Abbott Elementary” picked up three awards each: Best Supporting Actress, Best Screenplay and Best Casting at the Emmys and Best Lead Actress Comedy, Best Supporting Actor and Best Comedy Series at the Golden Globes.
Those who first became aware of “Abbott Elementary” through our year-end list and/or the award ceremonies – including the author of this article – can look forward to new episodes very soon: As has now been announced, “Abbott Elementary” will continue with season 2 on 1 March 2023 on Disney+. There will be ten episodes at the start, with more to follow in the course of the year.
For explanation: “Abbott Elementary” is not an original series of Disney+, but runs in the USA on the TV channel ABC, which belongs to the Disney group. There, the broadcast of the second season already began in September 2022 (!), so now the first batch of new episodes will arrive here with a time delay. And twelve more episodes will follow.
While “Abbott Elementary” Season 1 only had 13 episodes in total, the series was extended to the classic network series length of 22 episodes for Season 2. The broadcast on ABC should be over on 5 April 2023, the remaining episodes will therefore probably be available on Disney+ in Germany this summer at the latest.

“Abbott Elementary” is a workplace comedy in the tradition of “The Office” or its German equivalent “Stromberg”, told in the style of a mockumentary – i.e. a fictional series that pretends to be a documentary.
It centres on a group of male and female teachers (played by Quinta Brunson, Tyler James Williams and Sheryl Lee Ralph, among others) at Willard R. Abbott Elementary School in Philadelphia, who have to deal with the daily worries and problems surrounding their underpaid jobs and the children entrusted to their care…
