Tár: Musical drama starring Cate Blanchett as a conductor tasked with leading a renowned German orchestra.

Plot and background

Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett) has made a name for herself as a conductor and is considered a star in a male-dominated world. She is the first woman to take over the direction of a renowned German orchestra, but not everyone is happy with this decision. For Lydia, a tightrope act begins, in which not only her creativity is at stake, but also power, institutional racism and the question of authority.

“Tár” – background, cast, cinema release

With his third film and a hiatus as director of more than 16 years, Todd Field returns to the director’s chair after the Oscar-nominated films “In the Bedroom” (2001) and “Little Children” (2006). The musical drama “Tár” delves into the world of classical music and shows a woman who, against all odds, has to prove herself as the conductor of a renowned orchestra.

The screenplay was written by Todd Field himself, and the leading role was played by none other than Oscar winner Cate Blanchett (“Blue Jasmine”). Could it be enough for the blonde acting icon to win her third gold medal? In industry circles, “Tár” is already considered a favourite for the 2023 Oscar.

In addition to Blanchett, the film stars Mark Strong (“Zero Dark Thirty”), Noémie Merlant (“Where the Sun Rises in Paris”), Julian Glover (“Troy”) and Nina Hoss (“A Most Wanted Man”). Filming took place mainly in Berlin, with several days of shooting at the Kulturpalast in Dresden, the Palais im Großen Garten in Dresden, the Orangerieschloss in Potsdam, the Berlin Cathedral and the Hufeisensiedlung in Britz.

The world premiere will take place at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, where the drama competed for the Golden Lion and eventually won the Best Actress award for Cate Blanchett’s performance. While “Tár” already opens regularly in US cinemas on 7 October 2022, German audiences still have to be patient. In this country, “Tár” can be seen in cinemas from 2 March 2023.
