Worse than “Batman V Superman”: “Ant-Man 3” collapses at the box office

by Mike

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” is running out of steam after a good start: On the second weekend, the box office results of the blockbuster fell by 69.7 per cent. This means that the MCU film fell even harder than “Batman V Superman”!

The weekend’s box office results hold a few surprises – the worldwide box office slump of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” is particularly remarkable. Although the prelude to Phase 5 of the MCU continues to defend pole position in many countries, box office receipts fell by a full 69.7 per cent in North America. That’s the biggest box-office drop ever for an MCU title after its first weekend.

Previous frontrunner was the Scarlett Johansson vehicle “Black Widow,” whose box office performance plummeted 67.8 percent after its opening weekend – but it must be noted here that the film was released during the Corona pandemic and was also released on Disney+ at the same time.

“ANT MAN 3” SLUMPS MORE THAN “BATMAN V SUPERMAN “

By the way, this makes “Ant-Man 3″ not only the MCU negative leader, but also the general leader of all superhero films that opened with 100 million US dollars or more in the first weekend. Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice” had previously been ahead of the pack. At the time, the DC comic adaptation recorded a drop of 69.1 per cent after its release.

Among the MCU films, it was so far “Thor: Love and Thunder” that had the biggest crash of a film that had started with over 100 million dollars at the box office. The third solo outing from the God of Thunder fell a whopping 67.7 per cent after a strong start of $144.2 million. “Black Widow”, by the way, started with “only” 80 million US dollars on its first weekend in cinemas at the time, but this was probably due to the pandemic release.

“ANT MAN 3” ALSO LOSES SIGNIFICANTLY IN CHINA

But things are not looking good for “Ant Man 3” in other markets either. In China, now one of the most important markets for big Hollywood blockbusters, the sequel fell to third place and managed to bring in just 7 million US dollars – which means that the box office results here are clearly behind those of the first two “Ant Man” parts. Experts are now predicting that the film will earn a total of around $40 million in China. By comparison, “Ant Man” grossed about $105.4 million in 2015 and the sequel “Ant-Man and the Wasp” was just under $121.2 million in 2018.

In total, the Ant-Man sequel has so far grossed just under $167 million in the American market, coming in at around $363 million worldwide.
