The second season of the fantasy series “Shadow And Bone – Legends Of Grisha” launched on Netflix a week ago and while it made it to the top of the Netflix top ten in Germany, it failed to do so worldwide.
Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) is back to fight The Dark One (Ben Barnes) – and the curse of early cancellation of numerous young-adult fantasy formats on Netflix. Most recently, the streaming service pulled the plug on “Warrior Nun”, “Fate: The Winx Saga”, “Half Bad: The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself” and “Cursed”, among others. The series “Shadow And Bone – Legends Of Grisha” can build on a large fan base for the novels by Leigh Bardugo. But here, too, numbers will decide in the end: Will “Shadow And Bone” get a third season and the “Six Of Crows” spin-off or not?
The numbers that decide among other things are the hours watched – and Netflix evaluates them once a week. A look at the global Netflix top 10 shows: “Shadow And Bone” season 2 did not directly make the leap to number 1. The top spot in the charts is still occupied by “You Will Love Me” season 4 with 64 million hours watched. The new episodes of “Shadow And Bone” reach 2nd place with 50 million hours.
PLACE 1 FOR “SHADOW AND BONE” THEN NEXT WEEK?
But as is so often the case, the numbers are not entirely comparable, so caution is advised in jumping to conclusions: On Netflix, films and series start on different days of the week. However, the charts always refer to the total figures for a week from Monday to Sunday. While the fourth season of “You”, which has been available in its entirety on Netflix since the previous week, could be watched for a full seven days last week, Season 2 of “Shadow And Bone” only started on Thursday, 16 March 2023, so it only had four days.
And another detail in the global top ten is also important: The first season of “Shadow And Bone – Legends Of Grisha” moved up to fifth place in the charts with 24 million hours. The release of the first episodes was two years ago, so it seems that many viewers are now rewatching (or watching for the first time) season 1 before turning to season 2.
More meaningful will be the chart numbers of the coming week. And as a rule, Netflix waits four weeks anyway before judging the success or failure of a format – and any renewals or cancellations. But it can already be said with caution: The second season of “Shadow And Bone” does not seem to be an absolute high-flyer.
INTERNATIONAL MEGAHIT: “THE GLORY “
When it comes to non-English-language series, on the other hand, it’s a completely different story – there’s a clear high-flyer, and has been for weeks. The South Korean revenge series “The Glory” bagged another almost 124 million streamed hours in its seventh week. First place in the weekly charts is as clear as mud, and in the all-time charts for non-English-language series, season 1 of “The Glory” has already moved up to seventh place with 380 million hours.
In Germany, too, word of the insider tip is spreading more and more: In the German Netflix series top ten, “The Glory” is currently in 5th place. Find out more about the thriller series here:
