Disney+ has unveiled the official trailer for American Born Chinese, the forthcoming fantasy dramedy which will premiere on May 24.
The video includes new action-packed footage featuring Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh. It shows a high school student whose unexpected friendship with a new classmate leads him to a world-saving mission involving Chinese mythological gods.

“It tells the story of Jin Wang, an average teenager juggling his high school social life with his home life,” reads the synopsis. “When he meets a new foreign student on the first day of the school year, even more worlds collide as Jin is unwittingly entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods.”
Disney+’s American Born Chinese is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a screenplay written by brothers Kelvin Yu (Bob’s Burgers) and Charles Yu (Westworld), with Kelvin Yu also set as the showrunner. It is being described as a genre-hopping action-comedy that is set to explore issues of identity, culture, and family.
The series stars Michelle Yeoh (Shang-Chi) as Guanyin, Ben Wang (MacGyver) as Jin Wang, Yeo Yann Yann (Wet Season) as Christine Wang, Chin Han (Mortal Kombat) as Simon Wang, Daniel Wu (Reminiscence) as Sun Wukong, Ke Huy Quan (The Goonies) as Freddy Wong, former Taekwondo champion Jim Liu as Wei-Chen, and Sydney Taylor (Just Add Magic) as Amelia.
American Born Chinese is executive produced by Cretton, the Yu Brothers, Gene Luen Yang, Erin O’Malley, Melvin Mar, Jake Kasdan, and Asher Goldstein. The series is a production by 20th Television.
