Plot and background

After the financial disaster of the first “Super Mario Bros.” Live Action movie in 1993, Nintendo and Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto was reluctant to instigate another film adaptation. 30 years have now passed and the enthusiasm for the Italian plumber Mario, Princess Peach and his friends and adversaries knows no bounds. On April 5, 2023, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” will finally be released in German cinemas.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” – plot, cast

In “Mario,” brothers Mario and Luigi are suddenly sucked into a mysterious tube while doing plumbing work in Brooklyn and catapulted into a magical other world. When Mario and Luigi are separated, the plumber, with the help of Mushroom Kingdom resident Toad and Princess Peach, the strong-willed ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, embarks on a journey through a gigantic maze and encounters many an obstacle.

What is certain is that several big Hollywood stars have been cast for the animated film. Mario is voiced by Chris Pratt (“Jurassic World” series), Princess Peach by Anya Taylor-Joy (“Emma”), Luigi by Charlie Day (“Pacific Rim” series) and Toad by Keegan-Michael Key (“The Lion King”).

The antagonists include stars like Seth Rogen (“Sausage Party”) as Donkey Kong, Jack Black (“School of Rock”) as Bowser, Fred Armisen (“Anchorman”) as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson (“Invincible”) as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco (“Catch Me”) as Foreman Spike.

The Mario voice actor from the video games, Charles Martinet, will make several cameo appearances.

“Mario” – background, theatrical release

Before it was time for the animated film “Mario”, numerous talks with filmmakers had to drag into the country, before Shigeru Miyamoto finally found the perfect partner in Chris Meledandri, head of Illuminati animation studios.

The first plans to get the “Mario” film off the ground began to take shape in 2016. At the time, it was still assumed that it would be released in 2020. Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (both “Teen Titans Go!”), the blockbuster was finally realized. The screenplay was written by Matthew Fogel (“The Lego Movie 2”). The theatrical release of “Mario” is March 23, 2023.
