All the Beauty and the Bloodshed: Emotional and intimate documentary by Academy Award winner Laura Poitras about artist and activist Nan Goldin and her advocacy against the opioid crisis in the U.S.
Plot and background
U.S. artist and activist Nan Goldin is considered one of the best-known and most influential contemporary photographers. She gained particular notoriety with “Ballad of Sexual Dependency,” a slide show she created in the 1980s depicting her life and that of her friends in 1970s and 1980s New York. Goldin intimately captures the LGBTQ community and the “no wave” underground scene she was a part of.
With “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” an emotional documentary about the internationally renowned artist is now coming to theaters. The film tells her story with the help of slide shows, personal interviews, impressive photographs of the artist and rare film footage. It covers, among other things, her activist fight against the billionaire Sackler family, which bears a major responsibility in the spreading opioid crisis in the United States. Through her activist group Pain, which Goldin launched in 2018, she still draws attention to the Sacklers’ culpability and speaks out against cultural institutions that accept donations from members of the family.
