Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse : In the second installment of the “Spider-Man” animated film series, Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy get closer – visit from some more Spider-Men included.
Plot and background
After Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore in the original) managed to defeat Wilson Fisk aka the Kingpin (Liev Schreiber) in the first part and destroy his particle accelerator, New York seems to be saved. Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson), Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), Spider-Ham (John Mulaney) and Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn) have returned to their home dimensions, the gate to the multiverse closed. But where does the voice Miles hears come from?
Even the post-credit scene of “Spider-Man: A New Universe” left a loophole open for a sequel. In it, we see Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) traveling back in time with the help of a bracelet. So the multiverse doesn’t seem to be completely closed off. This would also explain why Miles Morales hears the voice of Gwen Stacy. And indeed, it comes in the second part “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” to a reunion with Gwen Stacy and Brooklyn’s friendly neighborhood spider, which is now a full-time Spider-Man, catapulted across the multiverse, where he meets a team of Spider-People. Their mission is to protect the existence of the multiverse. But when the many heroes clash with their big egos over how to deal with a new threat, Miles must step in and redefine what it means to be a hero. Also, so he can save those he loves the most.
The official trailer promises an exciting adventure in the multiverse with the signature animation style that thrilled in the first part:
“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” – background, theatrical release
Although 2018 wasn’t exactly poor in comic book adaptations and superhero movies, one production in particular stood out: the visually stunning 3D animated film “Spider-Man: A New Universe” from director Bob Persichetti (“The Little Prince”). Together with producers and screenwriters Phil Lord and Chris Miller (“The Lego Movie”), Persichetti created a great mix of the most diverse animation styles, garnished with a completely wacky plot.
In no time at all, the first part went from being an insider tip to an audience favorite. Worldwide, the film grossed almost 340 million dollars, easily outstripping many a big blockbuster. A second part was therefore quickly announced by ex-Sony boss and producer Amy Pascal. It is already certain that “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” will be directed by Joaquim Dos Santos (“Avatar”) from a script by David Callaham (“Wonder Woman 1984”).
The plot of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” will continue the love story of Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Woman. This was already hinted at in the first part and could now be elaborated on based on the comic “Sitting in a Tree”. Another important role will certainly be played by Spider-Man 2099, as he has an overview of all dimensions from the future. Also, we would bet that Peter-Porker will be romping around on the big screen again.
The official German theatrical release date for the animated adventure “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is June 1, 2023.
