The Pope’s Exorcist: Horror film starring Russell Crowe, based on tales told by Gabriele Amorth, a priest who is said to have performed more than 70,000 exorcisms in his lifetime on behalf of the Church and the Vatican.

Plot and background

Father Gabriele Amorth (Russell Crowe) is a practicing chief exorcist for the Vatican. When Amorth is called to a possessed boy, he has no idea what a terrifying case he is in for. During his investigation, the exorcist comes across a centuries-old conspiracy that the Vatican has desperately tried to keep secret and gets dangerously close to the devil himself.

Michael Petroni, R. Dean McCreary and Chester Hastings created the screen story for “The Pope’s Exorcist” based on the books “An Exorcist Tells” and “New Accounts of an Exorcist” by Father Gabriele Amorth. The Italian Roman Catholic priest was the exorcist of the diocese of Rome, whose head is none other than the Pope himself, for thirty years from 1986 until his death in 2016. During this time, Amorth says he performed more than 70,000 exorcisms in the name of the Church. He reports on the most drastic cases in his books.

“The Pope’s Exorcist” – Cast, release date

Oscar winner Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) stars in a horror thriller for the first time in his career with the lead role of exorcist Gabriele Amorth. Daniel Zovatto (“Don’t Breathe”), Alex Essoe (“Midnight Mass”) and Franco Nero (“The Collini Case”) were in front of the camera at his side. Australian director and screenwriter Julius Avery (“Operation: Overlord”) took a seat in the director’s chair and filmed the supernatural horror thriller from a script by Michael Petroni and Evan Spiliotopoulos.

Here in Germany, you can be scared from 6 April 2023 when “The Pope’s Exorcist” opens in German cinemas.
