Now available on Netflix is 2021 fantasy action starring a John Wick 4 star that continued a dead-end series of video game adaptations after 24 years.

Mortal Kombat is a child of its time. The 1995 adaptation of the popular and bloody video game series worked well for fans, but was followed up shortly after with the hair-raising flop Mortal Kombat 2. It wasn’t until 2021 that the new Mortal Kombat breathed fresh air into the series with John Wick: Chapter 4 hero Hiroyuki Sanada. Now Netflix has added him to the line-up.

On Netflix: fantasy smash hit with John Wick 4 star gets a sequel soon

In the latest Mortal Kombat, everything remains fundamentally the same. The alien world Outworld threatens the Earth and challenges our best fighters via Mortal Kombat competition to decide on supremacy. Thunder deity Raiden (Tadanobu Asano) wants to assemble a powerful force. And the sinister Scorpio (Sanada) also interferes in the war of the worlds.

Like each of its film predecessors, the film is based on the eponymous series of fighting games in which two fighters compete against each other using different techniques. The franchise is known for its bloodthirsty death scenes, in which it is not uncommon for entire limbs to be severed from the defeated opponent.

In the cinema, the reboot became a success story after 24 years. Mortal Kombat 2 is in the works and is to feature a The Boys star as a fan favourite. Exactly when the sequel will be released is not yet officially clear. We expect a cinema release in 2024.
